2 lessons about happiness that completely changed my mindset

2 lessons about happiness that completely changed my mindset2 lessons about happiness that completely changed my mindsetRecently, Ive had two eye-opening realizations about life. Spoiler alert Theyre actually notlage all that groundbreaking. But theyve helped me feel happier when things arent going as planned, and I can almost guarantee theyll do the same for you.Truth 1 Everyone, at any given time, is feeling sad, stressed, or bummed out aboutsomethingNo ones life is as perfect as it seems. Now, this might seem incredibly obvious. But with our highly filtered social media feeds, its easy to think that everyones real lives are just as happy and sunny as their Instagrams filled with sunsets, smoothie bowls, and dinners with friends.Whether its a major obstacle - a sick loved one, a failed marriage - or a more minor setback - a delayed flight, fallout with a friend, pressure from their boss - every single part you know is dealing with some situation thats sorta shitty.I dont mean t o be a bummer I just want us to get real for a second. BecauseIm completely guilty of it too.I pretty much only deutsche post dhl photos of vacations, fun workouts, gorgeous dinners, or career achievements.I dont post about the times when my anxiety makes me stay in bed all day on a Sunday, or when I wonder what the hell Im doing with my life, or why Im not as successful or happy as others seem to be. As my mom reminded me once, if someone looked at my life on social media feeds, theyd be impressed, and maybe even a little bit jealous.Another example I was recently talking to an old friend about her new relationship. She now lives halfway across the world in Australia, so clearly I dont know too many details about her life. All I know is that she and her boyfriend always look incredibly joyful on social media (as most do). In fact, she is happier than ever with her new partner. But she reminded that even being in a relationship isnt always easy. It takes effort, it takes personal de velopment work, it takes check-ins with each other. They fight. They go through hard times. Its not all sunshine and cozy Sunday-night dinners, although thats what we see on Instagram.Point being, people arent always 100% happy. And if youre going through something difficult, youre far from alone. Now for the tough love.Truth 2 Feeling sorry for yourself isnt going to help you feel happierDont get me wrong- I fully believe its okay to not be okay. Its okay to feel anxious or depressed. Its okay to be angry or disappointed in someone. We live in a time when mental health is being talked about more openly, and thats amazing. Talk about how you feel. Go see a therapist if you want. Allow yourself to feel bad.In fact, one way to get happier is to acknowledge your negative thoughts, rather than try to stop them. As this excellent New York Times article puts it, own your worries. When you are stuck in a negative cycle, acknowledge it. Think to yourself Im worrying about work, or Im obsessin g about my ex. Then, challenge those thoughts, or rewrite them. Instead of thinking, Im a failure, think instead Ive had a setback at work, but Im going to learn from it and move in. (Yep, this is a simplistic description of what it means to practice mindfulness, that happiness buzzword you see everywhere.)Dwelling on the past and ruminating over what happened - what that person did wrong, what you did wrong - keeps you parked there, in the past. And continuing to focus narrowly in on yourself, your fears, your worries isnt the way to help yourself feel better. So heres another game-changing way to stop feeling sorry for yourself Take the focus away from yourself, and put it on bringing value to others. Isnt that what the world needs more of, rather than rumination and negative thinking?I dont mean you have to go sign up for the Peace Corps or even have a steady volunteer gig. (Although you should if you have the time) But here are a few little to help others, and in effect, help y ourself, feel better.Talk to a stranger. Strike up a conversation with someone after your yoga class, at the grocery store, or in the coffee shop. Theres literally no drawback, and major potential upsides.Write. Some research suggests that writing in a journal for 15 minutes a day can lead to a boost in overall happiness and well-being. Then, share it If youre reading this, you probably know how great it feels to know someone else is going through the same stuff you are.Provide something to someone in need. Offer a protein bar or a bottle of water to a homeless person. Donate clothes or bedding to Goodwill. Give your sister that shirt shed always steal from you.Send a long email to an old friend. Fill them in on your life, and ask about theirs.Call your grandparents. Or your parents. Thank them for everything they do for you. If youre lucky enough to live nearby, go see them in person.Obviously, these ideas arent guaranteed to make you jump with joy, and some issues run much deeper than quick fixes. But take it from me They might just make those tough times a little easier, which is all we can really want, right? This article was originally published on ThriveGlobal.com.

I went to the gym this morning. I have a really great coach in the city. Weve worked together for at least eight years. Or I do yoga with James Murphy. The biggest hiring challenges, according to 15 experts

The biggest hiring challenges, according to 15 expertsThe biggest hiring challenges, according to 15 expertsHiring today is very different than it was just 10 years ago, largely because we are in acandidate-driven market where job hunter expectations have a bigger impacton what hiring managers have to take into consideration. With that in mind, we thought it might be useful to get some insight into how todays job market looks like from a common challenge perspective. In other words whats making life really difficult these days for recruiters and hiring managers? To get that insight, we went and asked some seasoned hiring managers and recruiters what their thoughts are about todays biggest hiring challenges. Specifically, we asked them to answer this questionWhat is the 1 hiring challenge youre facing today? What was interesting was that all of the answers boiled down to five main hiring challenges. Sure, those challenges play out in different ways depending on yur company size, hiri ng needs and multiple other factors, but its re-affirming that theres some sort of consensus in the market. Here are those five biggest hiring challenges we all binnenseem to be facing today, along with what each expert specifically shared about each challengeAdapting to this new job marketThe biggest challenge in hiring today is that hiring managers do not behave as if they are in a candidates market. Unemployment is low and it is harder to engage talented professionals for new job opportunities. On the flip side, hiring managers often require a lengthy bewerbungsgesprch process along with assessments for skills and personality. Assessments designed to reduce the burden on the interview process sometimes become additive instead. This is where the problem lies. Candidates are being asked to do mora and mora, but there is no scarcity of jobs to encourage them to participate in a more stringent process. Some candidates end up abandoning the process early. Others are hired by someone wh o realizes it is a candidates market and moves more quickly to make them an offer. Because of this, recruiters are asked to find more and more candidates, yet they are leise working in a limited market. It is a self-perpetuating cycle.- Michelle Hawkins, Senior Healthcare Recruiting Specialist and a Team Lead atTalentCare- - - The biggest challenge Im facing right now is long lead times. Active candidates typically want a job NOW. In my own company, time-to-fill has gone from about one month to now two months. Keeping the best candidates engaged through this timeline is always tough. My advice? For candidates, always be looking. Never turn down an opportunity to interview because you never know when youll need your next job. For recruiters, targeting passive candidates who already have a job is a great way to meet their needs and yours- Glen Loveland,HR Manager, Global Talent Acquisition ofCGTNCompetitionIt used to be that we would have to compete for top talent with larger comp anies, but now were also competing with smaller start-up organizations. These start-ups are often willing to provide unique benefits (unlimited vacation, high educational allotment) that even large companies cannot provide. Not only that, start-ups often have the ability to entertain higher salary requirements since they are not limited by a concrete compensation structure like larger organizations. Even though staff are aware the start-up organization may sell in a few years, the option is still enticing enough to cause major competition for top talent.- Robin Schwartz, PHR, Managing Partner atMFG Jobs- - - One of our biggest challenges is getting through to potential job candidates when sometimes hundreds of other recruiters are reaching out to them at the same time. The techniques that worked 10 or even 5 years ago just arent effective anymore. Candidates know they have choices, so it takes a lot of effort to really stand out. One of the ways weve tackled the issue is by highl ighting the benefits of working for us beyond the typical salary/benefits (dog-friendly workspace, team happy hours, fully stocked kitchen). Candidates, especially millennials, need to know youre a company that really cares about its employees if theyre even going to consider applying.- Harrison Doan, Director of Analytics atSaatva- - - One of the biggest issues in hiring today relates to hiring tech talent. With increasing mobile usage, online shopping and the Internet of Things, having a strong technology team in your corner is ubiquitous.Unlike marketing or human resources, technology is still an emerging field in which the job candidate schwimmbecken is somewhat limited. Often times these highly skilled candidates are looking to work remotely and usually require extensive new technology to do their job well. With specialized talent in low supply, your company has to compete with a slew of other companies to find and retain someone that fits your companys need. For Veterans Uni ted Home Loans which is headquartered in the Midwest, tech talent is sparser than on the coast. Thankfully, our company culture revolves around our values, one of which is Be Passionate and Have Fun. While finding talent presents an issue, our culture allows us to provide the flexible environment, generous benefits and frequent perks that help to retain the highly skilled employees we hire. However, if your company does not fit the needs of a tech candidate, that person can fairly easily find a company that does. Retention of highly technical talent is a national issue that can be solved by both employers and potential employees. Companies in demand of highly skilled talent can shape their company culture to be more flexible and offer the appropriate resources to get the job done. At the same time, we should encourage more students to pursue careers in STEM to fulfill our increasing technical demands. As technology develops nationwide, company culture and resources should, too.- Em ily Clapp, PHR, SHRM-CP, Manager of HR programs and Talent Architect atVeterans United Home Loans- - - As a growing tech company with big aspirations, were relatively unknown in the US market. Especially when compared with our big competitors Our biggest challenge is being able to attract exceptional talent when were in competition with more established players. How can we be noticed?Weve always had extremely high standards when it comes to hiring, but when you marry high standards with a relatively low brand recognition, it can prove quite a challenge to either attract the right talent or not let your standards drop. One way we work to counteract this is to ensure a strong set of agreed-upon values, and that the candidates are assessed closely for this during the interview process. We want their values to match up with ours. This means we can uncover the types of people who arent necessarily drawn to the larger companies but want to work at a smaller startup where they can make a greater impact.- Jamie Finnegan, Head of Talent atFinder.com- - - Our biggest hiring challenge is competing with larger and more well-known corporations for top talent. While we offer competitive salaries and a host of employee benefits, many times job candidates are more drawn to the perceived status and job stability associated with bigger companies. In some cases, these larger corporations are able to outgun smaller firms like ours by offering more enticing compensation packages with guaranteed bonuses and stock options. Weve lost multiple potential new hires in the past who ended up choosing a more established business over ours. To combat this issue, we try our best to emphasize the upsides of working for a smaller company. Firms like ours offer greater flexibility in terms of work schedule, and there is more growth potential for new career coaches and resume writers who perform well to rapidly rise in seniority.- Peter Yang, Co-Founder ofResumeGo- - - A large number of o ur hires join Frank Recruitment Group in entry-level positions and we see a great deal of interest in these roles from recent graduates. One of the major challenges we face in hiring from this population of candidates is that there is so much choice on the market for university graduates seeking their first role in full-time employment. We aim to set ourselves apart from our competition by promoting our unique company culture as well as our generous compensation structure and rewards program. As our sales opportunities are open to candidates from any academic background, we are often in competition with other industries that are more directly-related to specific study fields. Some suitable candidates may simply not have considered a career in our industry as there is no direct link to their studies. However, we see great success from employees of all different academic backgrounds and work hard to raise our brand and industry profile amongst various education fields. We offer a full industry-leading training course to all employees so previous experience or exposure to our industry is not essential. Our company culture is diverse and hugely varied, and we welcome applications from all backgrounds.- Caroline Fox, Global Internal Recruitment Manager atFrank Recruitment GroupLack of quality candidatesThe 1 recruiting challenge is, a lack of skilled, quality talent in a demanding locationand industry.Todays job market is increasingly facing a deficit when it comes to specialized professions like engineering. The way to find success is to create a good customer experience throughout the process - from website to interview - that attracts high-quality candidates, whether theyre specialists who feel their value is recognized or more casual workers who can easily sense that the company is a-cut-above the myriad of other options available.- Darron Nelson, Recruiting Lead forClara Lending- - - One of the most common concerns we hear today from clients is that they are struggling to find candidates at all, especially qualified ones that they can even consider. An increased focus on finding the right talent and not making a poor hire has contributed to extending the time to fill beyond 30 days. Despite the challenges that a vacant position presents, its even worse to fill a job with the wrong candidate only to have to remedy the situation at a later date.Higher-level roles, for example have a tendency to be more difficult to fill. You are dealing with a smaller pool of candidates, generally. Oftentimes higher-level roles consider people who need to relocate or who want to first use the rest of their PTO before making a move. All of these personal and unique factors have to be taken into consideration. Lower-level roles, on the other hand, tend to be easier to fill in a shorter amount of time because there tend to be less barriers to filling the position. The lower level roles are not without their own challenge, often times with these roles we are a faced with a sea of candidates that all look the same. With a 4.4% unemployment rate, the market has shifted within the last decade from an employer-centric market to a candidate-centric one. Its made the hiring landscape more and more competitive among employers. Candidates have their pick and are oftentimes entertaining multiple offers, which forces employers to mobilize to make these offers, benefits, and compensation more attractive to keep that competitive edge.- Stephanie Troiano, Account Manager and Executive Recruiting atThe Hire TalentDiversityOver the years the hiring challenges change. Sometimes in the companies favor, while other times in the candidates favor. The candidates have been favored for a long time. Yet now, a new problem has come up. Diversity. All companies want it, few truly understand how to get it. Diversity hires are not something you can solely look for. Thats the problem. You need to have an inclusion plan set in place. To get true diversity in th e workplace, it takes years. You have to start somewhere and this is where companies fall short. They think this is something they can fix in a month. Its frustrating for everyone involved. The sooner you begin to understand why diversity hires are important to a companies growth and not just a quota. The sooner this problem is solved.- Brianna Rooney, Recruiter of 10 years and Owner ofTechees- - - In our experience, the biggest hiring challenge relates to diversity. Recruiters are struggling to get sufficient applications from ethnic minorities, women and those from lower-income backgrounds. This is particularly true in the tech sector, but certainly also applies to the banking/finance sector, and the accountancy/consulting sector.Part of the problem lies with perception many in those groups feel that they wont fit in. And so the challenge for recruiters is twofold to find ways to target them effectively (ie find out where jobseekers from those groups are active, both online and offline) and then to find messages that resonate with them. Testimonials from others from their group who have applied, been offered a role and started work at particular companies can often be effective in this regard.- James Rice, Head of Digital Marketing atWikijobA true culture and company fit, for candidate AND companyI believe that finding candidates who have a genuine interest in working at my company is one of the top challenges I face. Despite what I hear about finding qualified candidates, I feel that thats less the issue than people sorting out the job applicants who are mainly interested in a job - and those who want *your* specific job. While theres nothing wrong with having a desire to just find and do a job (or a company that is mainly interested in filling a functional role), I believe a candidate is a better match in the longer term if they have a genuine interest in the culture and mission and products/services of your company. This is especially important to me as someone who runs a company with a social mission. There will always be good and bad times at a company and the people who want to work somewhere specific because of what the company does or stands for will tend to weather those ups and downs better, which is why I believe this is an important hiring challenge for companies to solve.- Georgene Huang,CEO Co-founder ofFairygodboss- - - I think that the biggest challenge is creating a great company culture to attract and retain the best talent in todays competitive hiring market. As employment numbers increase, people have more leverage in the market and it has become harder to attract and retain great talent. People are savvier today about figuring out if a place is a good one to work at. There are anonymous online tools like Glassdoor, and they can look at LinkedIn recommendations to see what people are saying about the company and co-workers. In a competitive job market, people will have more than one place they could work, an d they evaluate resources like these. To be successful in a more competitive hiring market you need to create a culture and business that people are really excited to work at. Then you dont lose people, and word tends to spread about what a great place it is to work. You can try to gloss over a crappy work environment with higher pay and perks, but ultimately, people leave their jobs because their manager is bad or because the company has a crappy culture that sucks the life out of them. But its hard to fake, you have to create an authentic, genuinely awesome place to work, or your best employees will go somewhere else that does.- Steven Benson, Founder and CEO ofBadger Maps- - - Its difficult to know if applicants will properly fit in well with your corporate culture and interact well with your current team. A firm understanding of how your current employees engage with each other will help to know what kind of questions you should ask candidates. Nothing is worse than hiring some one that doesnt follow the flow of your organization.- Sean Fitzpatrick, President ofTalentMapThis article was originally published on Kununu.com.

5 Signs of Burnout at Work (and What to Do About Them) - The Muse

5 Signs of lassitudo at Work (and What to Do About Them) - The Muse5 Signs of exhaustion at Work (and What to Do About Them)I can recall one specific time in my career when things became really- I mean really- difficult.Trudging to my desk each morning felt like a feat of superhuman strength. Once I actually made it there, Id stare at my laptop screen for minutes on end, just willing myself to get something accomplished. Even if I managed to make a decent dent in my to-do list for the day, I still felt hopeless- like I was stuck on this hamster wheel Id never hop off of.I vented to numerous loved ones about my workday woes, and they all had the same response It sounds like youre burnt out. Nah, thats not true, Id respond nonchalantly. Things have just been busy lately and Im in a funk about it. Ill bounce back.As Im sure so many other people have, I brushed aside behauptung red flags as normal work stress. A little bit of exhaustion, frustration, and anxiety was a standard part of wo rking life, right? Thats why it came with a paycheck.Spoiler alert What I was feeling wasnt actually justifiable stress. I really was teetering on the edge of full-fledged exhaustion, and (ironically) it took a lot of hard work and habit changes to bring myself back. The experience itself was brutal, but it also made me realize that its incredibly difficult to identify the signs of burnout at work when theyre actually happening. Despite the fact that burnout has become a bit of a buzzword, its still a tough concept to wrap our arms around- wheres the dividing line between normal stress and a larger problem? Read on for a guide to exactly what burnout is, the signs its happening, and what you can do when you realize youre sliding down that slippery slope. What Is BurnoutReally?Unfortunately, there hasnt always been one centralized definition of burnout to point to. However, in May 2019, the World Health Organization announced the 11th revision of its grenzberschreitend Statistical Cla ssification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), which includes an updated and much more detailed entry on burnout. Previously defined only as a state of vital exhaustion, its now classified as a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. The WHO emphasizes that burnout is specifically work-related- it should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life- and is characterized by A sense of exhaustion or depletionMental distance from or negativity or cynicism about workDecreased effectiveness at work This new description echoes some common themes that most researchers and experts tend to agree on. Burnout is when somebody just feels depleted from doing the task at hand, says Alice Domar, PhD, Director of the Domar Center for Mind/Body Health. It happens when the demands being put upon you exceed the resources you have. The tank is empty.Domar points out that burnout is more than a bad day or a tough week- after all, every job has those. Burnout tends to be when you just dont have any good days, and it goes on for a long period of time, she says. What Are the Signs of Burnout?Sure, you get the overall idea and understand that its something that persists for longer than a week or two. But it can still be challenging to turn the magnifying glass on yourself and recognize when you might be veering straight toward feeling burnt out at work. Take it from someone whos been there before I totally get it. So lets try to make things as black and white as possible by looking at a few of the most common and prevalent symptoms of burnout. 1. You Cant Get Excited About Work AnymoreDomar explains that one of the telltale signs of burnout is a lack of interest or enthusiasm about what youre doing. Even the projects that used to make you feel fulfilled now leave you feeling completely depleted. They dont get the same level of satisfaction, says Domar of people who are experiencing burno ut. They dont get the same thrill if it goes well.In the worst case scenario, this attitude of indifference can extend beyond your work and negatively impact your interest in various aspects of your life outside of the office.Put simply, if youre struggling to muster up even a shred of enthusiasm for things that used to energize you, thats a giant, waving red flag not just for burnout, but for depression. (If you think you might be depressed, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.)2. Youve Stopped Putting in the EffortThat lack of excitement often leads directly to a negative and even apathetic attitude. A lot of it is just not caring anymore, Domar explains. You think, Okay, Im going to go to work and Im going to complete the tasks that are set in front of me. But Im not going to put myself into it and Im not going to go out of my way to improve it. Im just going to do the bare minimum to get by.She adds that people who struggle with burnout are often those who have r eputations as high achievers, so these signs of burnout on the job are typically a stark contrast when compared with their normal approach to their work. 3. Your Performance Is SufferingAs you might expect, this disinterest in daily tasks often leads to poorer performance- because people who are burnt out simply dont care enough to do things well.Personally, this was one of the biggest warning signs that I was majorly struggling. Im normally compulsive about double-checking my work and meeting deadlines. When my editors kept pointing out errors and I was letting submission dates slide by without a single care, I knew I had a far more significant issue on my hands. 4. Youre Totally ExhaustedFatigue and an overall feeling of exhaustion are commonly-cited indicators of burnout, Domar explains. Youll not only deal with a lack of energy physically, but you can also feel emotionally depleted and drained. So if getting yourself out of bed and to the office each day is a more demanding chall enge than normal, you could be tiptoeing into burnout territory. 5. Youre Dealing With Physical AilmentsBurnout doesnt have a consistent physical manifestation for everyone. However, there are numerous physical complaints that have been reported with burnout, includingInsomniaChest painHeadachesIncreased illnessHeart palpitationsShortness of breathDizziness or faintingGastrointestinal painOf course, there could be a slew of other explanations for these sorts of aches, pains, and issues as well. But particularly if youre experiencing them along with the emotional changes discussed above, they might serve as a physical indicator of your burnt out state. Youre Burnt Out...What Now?Okay, so you recognize several (or even all) of these signs of burnout from work in yourself. Uhh...now what? What can you do to stop this train from speeding down the tracks- and eventually off the rails entirely?Oft-repeated advice would tell you to take some time off, and its true that a break can at least give you a bit of breathing room. But Domar explains that if a vacation is all you do, its really just a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. If you take a day or even a week off, youre still coming back, she says. Youre still the same person and the job is the same job.Instead of merely pressing pause and removing yourself from your situation for the time being, you need to do something to actively change it. Domar says that really boils down to two thingsChanging your attitudeChanging your workloadTo change your attitude, youll want to learn to recognize negative habits and thought patterns and work to stop them when they happen. For example, thinking, I have to do this perfectly or Ill be a failure. You challenge some of these thoughts and get away from that all-or-nothing thinking, Domar says.Research suggests that perfectionism is closely linked with burnout. So recognizing and then removing some of these self-imposed pressures can help you breathe a little easier at work (and hopefull y feel a little less stressed on a daily basis). The second change is to decrease your volume of work. Burnout can happen when you simply have too much on your plate, and in those cases what you really need to do is lighten your load. Approach your boss to have a conversation about the fact that you feel overworked (heres a guide to handling that discussion professionally) and identify ways that you can manage a more reasonable workload moving forward. In my own situation, I finally (after a lot of convincing and cajoling from my loved ones) ended up dropping some of my clients to free up a little more time for myself. That action alone helped to decrease my anxiety, increase my energy levels, and help me feel at least a little bit like my old self again. Finally, to tie this all back to the changing your attitude aspect, its important that you also recognize those moments when you find yourself saying yes to an obligation- when you know you should really turn it down. Catch your ten dency to overload yourself, and youll (hopefully) kick that bad habit to the curb and prevent this same situation in the future. Heres a lesson I had to learn the hard way Burnout is hard to recognize, and it doesnt go away on its own. Nope, it doesnt get better because you finally reached a new week or checked off another item on your to-do list.Identifying and then addressing burnout requires some conscious thought and effort (which, I know, is pretty much the last thing you want to think about when youre already feeling worn down). However, one final thing I realized is that I was ultimately the only one who could do something about my situation- I needed to settle into my spot in the drivers seat and take control over what wasnt working for me in my career. Im happy to report that I did that. I beat burnout and came out on the other side. And with the help of the above advice, Im confident that you can too.

When Employers Can Run Job Applicant Credit Reports

When Employers Can Run Job Applicant Credit Reports When Employers Can Run Job Applicant Credit Reports Bad credit can do more than prevent you from getting a mortgage, car loan, or credit card. Depending on where you and live and what you do for work, a less than stellar credit history can also keep you from getting a job. Why does good credit matter when you’re job searching? Because some employers run job applicant credit reports as part of the background check process during hiring. Especially when it comes to jobs where managing money, handling financial transactions or protecting confidential information is involved, bad credit can be an issue. Legal Status Regarding Use of Credit Reports in Employment The Fair Credit Reporting Act is federal legislation that regulates how consumer credit information is gathered and used, including by employers during the hiring process. The FCRA requires employers to obtain written permission from job applicants prior to running a credit report, and to inform candidates that the report may be used in hiring decisions. They must also inform candidates if they decide to pass on hiring them, based on information uncovered during the credit check. In addition, most states allow the use of credit reports by employers. However, not every state allows employers to use credit reports however they like during the hiring process. As of this writing, 10 states, the District of Columbia, and several cities restrict how credit reports can be used during employment screening. The 10 states are: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. What do these restrictions look like? For the most part, these laws prohibit the use of credit reports in employment decisions except under certain circumstances â€" for example, per Nolo.com, in Nevada it’s largely illegal for employers to use credit reports as part of the screening process, unless the job involves duties such as handling money, corporate credit cards, or financial accounts. Contact your State Department of Labor for information about how current laws apply to your location. How to Protect Your Credit Report Rights Tripp Scott, labor and employment attorney for Catalina Avalos, supplies the following information on credit reports and tips for job seekers to protect themselves from credit checks by employers. General Credit History Information Information from credit report must be used only for purposes requested.Employee has the right to know if any adverse action was taken as a result of information on the credit report; disclosure is required even if credit report information was not the main reason the applicant was turned down.Disclosure does not have to be in writing, but it is a good idea for an employer to keep a record of the written notification. An employer must provide the employee with the name, address, and telephone number of the consumer reporting agency including a toll-free telephone number established by the agency, if the agency compiles and maintains files on consumers on a nationwide basis. An employer must provide a statement that the consumer reporting agency did not make the decision to take the adverse action and is unable to provide the consumer the specific reasons why the adverse action was taken.Employees have the right to contact the credit reporting agency providing the employees credit report and attempt to correct any negative information.Employees may re-apply for the job if negative information is corrected and there were no other grounds for being denied employment. Job Applicant Credit Report Tips Have an accurate and truthful resume.Familiarize yourself with the information contained in your credit report.Determine if there is any negative information in your credit report.Attempt to correct the negative information in your credit report prior to seeking employment. Correcting negative entries can be time-consuming and frustrating. If an employer informs you that they will conduct a credit check, be prepared to decide between withdrawing your application for employment or pursuing the job. If you are denied employment based on information on the credit report, speak to the employer to see if you may re-apply. Credit Discrimination Issues Credit history checks may have the potential of having a disparate impact on minorities. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) can scrutinize employers, using credit history checks to disqualify prospective employees, in order to determine if the employers practice is a facially neutral practice linked to job-related criteria and/or is a business necessity. Liability for the Employer An employer who unlawfully uses information from an employees credit report may be subject to criminal penalties. An employer may also have exposure to civil penalties and be liable for attorneys fees.

5 Top Interview Red Flags for Employers

5 Top Interview Red Flags for Employers 5 Top Interview Red Flags for Employers From lies to lack of preparation, poor attitude, and insincerity, you can pick up on signs and collect evidence during an interview that the potential employee is not for you. If you know what you are looking for, employers can successfully spot these job interview red flags- before making a job offer to a prospective employee. They’re all deal breakers and you’ll recognize them most effectively in a well-thought-out, consistent, employee selection process. You’ll benefit, too, if you involve your trained employees in selecting their prospective coworkers. After all, who has the most to gain- or lose- from missing these interview red flags for employers.Interview Red Flags That Nix HiringYou’ll want to pass on candidates who exhibit these five interview red flags to employers. 01 Demonstrate No Evidence That They Researched Your Company sturti / Getty Images Have you ever met a candidate who was never responsible for anything that went wrong at work? Most HR staff members have. They’re a sight to behold as they blame coworkers, bosses, a lack of resources, and the lack of skills in their team members for every failure they describe. Was your candidate fired by a former employer? Listen carefully to her reasons why. If none of them involve anything she controlled or had responsibility for, run, run, as fast as you can. You want to hire employees who admit errors, make thoughtful mistakes and fix them, but always take responsibility while they own and repair the problem. Applicants are human. We all make mistakes. But, it’s the candidates fundamental approach to responsibility and their humanness that counts.Late candidates are never responsible for keeping the interview team waiting either; they traveled to the job interview with time to spare. But, their best intentions were foiled: by the accident, the overlong train, the unexpected detour, the poor directions provided by the employer- yadda, yadda, yadda. Something- not themselves- always prevented their timely arrival.Employers, it’s a red flag to heed, for more than the obvious reason. Believe it. 06 Concluding ThoughtsThese are the five major red flags that employers need to heed when interviewing prospective employees. Selecting and hiring an employee is hard work, but think of the process this way. You are asking an unknown individual to come into your home. You will work with that person every day, possibly for thirty years or more.Does it make any sense whatsoever to make hiring decisions based on a candidates interaction with one employee in a single interview? More importantly, will you invite a candidate with a fatal flaw, that you identified and worried about during the interview, to join your team? Surely- not.More About How to Interview and Select Employees5 More Interview Red Flags for EmployersChecklist for Hiring Employees

No Thanks, but Thanks

No Thanks, but Thanks No Thanks, but Thanks Also, regardless of the outcome of your job search, you want to send a thank you letter to the contact who got you in the door in the first place. Contacts need to be maintained, and even if things didn't go as hoped this time, that doesn't mean that next time they won't. If you treat the contact properly, they'll be more inclined to keep their ear to the ground for future openings they may hear about. Even if a contact is one of your best friends, don't take him or her for granted. We all have lots of friends, but how many would you recommend to come work at your place of business? A professional note of thank you is not only considerate, it shows that you can handle yourself gracefully in a business setting. In the following pages, we give examples of three different types of decline letters. The first writer has received a better offer, but her letter honestly and politely keeps the door open while inviting the first employer to sweeten the offer. The second letter is an outright turndown, but the writer's graciousness ensures that his interview can serve him well in the future. The third writer has withdrawn her name from consideration, but has briefly given her reasons for doing so, preventing herself from seeming flaky. How a Job Interview Is like a First Date

How a Job Interview Is like a First Date How a Job Interview Is like a First Date 7 Youre both nervous. Your palms are certainly sweating, but chances are that the person interviewing you is also breaking into a sweat. Meeting someone new can be anxiety-producing for anyone- your interviewer included. To help break the ice, think of your job interview less like standing in front of a firing range and more like a conversation with a friend. You should smile genuinely and let some of your personality shine through. By relaxing a bit during your interview, you’ll help your interviewer relax too. You’re both wearing uncomfortable clothes. Unless you conduct your job search in a three-piece suit from your home office, donning an interview outfit for a day can feel like you’re wearing someone else’s clothes. Ditto for your prospective boss, who most likely dressed up for your meeting as well. But being well-groomed is absolutely necessary during a job interview. By being well-dressed, you are trying to surreptitiously show your boss that you are as equally meticulous about your appearance as you are about your workload. You both want to impress. You may not realize it, but your interviewer has as much invested in the interview- and you- as you do. You want that telecommuting job you’re applying for, and he wants you to have it. After all, that’s why he’s taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with you. So in your efforts to land the job, be sure that you don’t hog the spotlight with an endless soliloquy of your previous employment and workplace skills. Be sure to ask your prospective boss lots of questions and give him time to talk about himself, too. Find out how he came to join the company and how he has witnessed its growth over time. Your job interview with a potential boss doesn’t have to end in first date disaster. By understanding that you’re both essentially feeling the same emotions, you’ll see your potential boss- and your job interview- in a whole new and exciting light. How to Ask to Work on Another Teams Project - The Muse

How to Ask to Work on Another Teams Project - The Muse How to Ask to Work on Another Teams Project You don’t hate your job necessarily, but you’re, well…bored. Your day-to-day responsibilities have become second nature, and you no longer feel like you’re being challenged. Then an idea smacks you in the face. Someone on the sales team is working on a new assignment you’d love to get your hands on. Or, you’ve been dying to start a company blog and no one’s taken the initiative. Or, you’re fascinated by social media and want to spend more time helping out the marketing team. Surely your boss would let you take on an outside project if it was for the good of the company? Here’s what you need to know to get them to say yes. Make a Convincing Case “First of all, do your homework. How would this help you in your job and help your team, [and] help your manager get work done?” says Muse career coach Valerie McMurray, who has 20+ years of experience in corporate leadership and human resources. Make the connection for your boss not just to how this project aligns with team or company goals, but how it’ll make you a more valuable employee. What skills will you develop? What relationships will you build? What discoveries could you make? Then, she says, write all this out in a plan: “This is what it would look like, this is the time it would take me, this is how it won’t impact my job.” (Need an easy presentation template to organize your thoughts? Try this one.) Finally, she adds, “Can you get anybody else to advocate for you?” Maybe the team member you’re looking to work with or another supervisor within your team can back up your claims and help you get permission from your boss. Grab coffee or sit down with them to understand how you can be a valuable asset or how you can participate in their work, and ask if they’d be willing to vouch for you. Approach Your Boss “You always want to emphasize and lead with how it’s going to benefit the boss- how it’ll make things better for him [or her], how it’ll make him or her look better,” says McMurray. This makes sense, right? If you can show it’ll be good for them (and not just good for yourself), you’re more likely to get their stamp of approval. So how do you approach this conversation? Well, you can send an email to start. For example: Hi [Boss’ Name], I’d like to discuss taking on a [department name] project. As of now, I’m currently working on [projects you’re working on]. These are on track to be completed by [when they’ll be finished] with the hope of [expected result], and are a top priority for me. However, I have a bit of room in my schedule to work on other assignments, and I’d love to explore the possibility of taking on [new project]. I believe this would be beneficial for both of us because [reasons why it would benefit you, your manager, and your team]. Would it be possible to sit down to chat more about this? Happy to send you my initial thoughts/plan, as well as get your feedback on this idea. [Your Name] Assuming you get a yes, finalize your presentation and prepare to walk your boss through your thought process (and if you get a no, jump straight to the next step): “I’ve noticed that [gap in process or goal] and think that this project will help…” “As you can see, this would directly contribute to our goals by…” “My hope is that through this project I’ll [develop X skills/improve Y process]” “I’d love to expand my skill set and become a stronger player, and believe this is the best option to do so because…” More importantly, prepare for and address any concerns they may have. What are the counterarguments to getting this project up? How will you defend yourself when they say they’re worried about it taking up too much of your time? Or, conflicting with your other responsibilities? Or, requiring them to manage you more? Understand That You Might Get a No (for Now) The reality of all this is that there’s no guarantee your manager will say yes- even if you did all your homework, even if you made a solid case, even if other people back you up. Your boss has the final say on what you work on, and it’s possible this project would conflict with their expectations for the future. Maybe they expect a massive project to be handed over to your team in the next couple months and so they need you to be ready and available. Or, they’re aware that company goals might be shifting and this project will no longer be feasible or in-line with the changes. Regardless, “be prepared to react in the right way,” says McMurray. How you respond to a no says wonders about who you are as an employee, and staying positive and professional may convince your boss to reconsider your request down the road. Here are some phrases to try: “I understand why you disagree with this and appreciate you explaining further.” “I wasn’t aware of those changes and am glad you brought them to my attention.” “Thank you for considering my idea, and I’m happy continuing to do what we’re doing now.” It’s also possible your boss will blatantly say that they’d be willing to revisit it later on. If that’s the case, says McMurray, hold them to it. You can say something along the lines of “Great, I understand. Is it OK if in six months I reach out to you to discuss this again?” and ask to set a meeting on the calendar. Make the Most of Your Current Situation If all doors are shut, says McMurray, “are there things you could come up with within your own team…that gives you a stretch assignment of some kind to help in your development?” Basically, are there other options for challenging yourself and learning within the bounds of your current job? Maybe you can’t start a blog, but you can assist your team in writing copy for your company newsletter. Or, instead of being able to help out your colleague on the sales team you grab coffee to learn more about the work they’re doing. Or, maybe you take your passions outside your office- signing up for an online class or taking on a side gig. Just because you can’t work on something under your boss’ eye doesn’t mean your growth has to stagnate. One more note: It’s key to have these career development conversations with your boss early on- usually when you’re just starting out at a new job. This way, when you approach them with a proposal like this, they already expected it and understand how it aligns with your career goals. “And managers aren’t always good at this, so it’s [up to] the employee to start that relationship and process out from the very beginning,” adds McMurray. So, moving forward, make it clear to your boss where you’re looking to go and how they might help you in getting there. You’ll immediately set yourself up to have more opportunities for exploration in your role.

A temporary side job I took for $15 at a time led me to a fulfilling career I never expected

A temporary side job I took for $15 at a time led me to a fulfilling career I never expected A temporary side job I took for $15 at a time led me to a fulfilling career I never expected A few months before I graduated with my MBA, I was searching for my first “real” job. I was living in Chicago at the time and open to moving just about anywhere for the right position. After sitting in a Starbucks for days and applying to hundreds of jobs, I finally got one response. The response was from a digital marketing agency in Chicago that specialized in helping car dealerships build their online presence. Since they didn’t have any openings for a full-time job, they asked me if I wanted to write automotive content for them on a freelance basis.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!At first, I was a bit frustrated. I spent so much time applying to jobs and the first bite I received wasn’t even for a full-time gig. After doing some more research on the company, I decided that I’d give this freelance thing a shot while I continued my search for a full-time job. I li ked cars and writing, so I figured I had nothing to lose.A few days after I accepted the freelance gig at the automotive marketing agency, they sent me my first assignment. It was a 350-word article on the 2013 lineup of Mercedes-Benz SUVs. The pay was only $15 but at the time I didn’t think that was bad because I finished it in less than an hour while sitting on my couch in my pajamas.I continued to write these automotive articles for $15 a pop until I landed my first full-time job as a link builder at a large marketing company in Charlotte, North Carolina. After a few months at my full-time job in Charlotte, I decided that I’d love some extra money and began writing the automotive articles again. It was a nice little side gig that allowed me to pay for a few luxuries that my meager entry-level salary simply didn’t allow for.Eventually, I moved back home to Cleveland and found a new full-time job at an insurance company. I continued to freelance write on the side but wanted t o diversify my portfolio so I began to search for new clients. After landing three new clients, I was able to significantly increase my writing income and write about more than just cars. I was writing about dental procedures, home improvement projects, moving solutions, and a plethora of other random topics.I loved making extra money on the side in the comfort of my own home and continued to do so for the next four years. I was landing new clients on a regular basis and eventually got to the point where I was earning more from freelancing than I was working full-time for someone else.Since I was writing before work, after work, and on the weekends, I started to get very overwhelmed. I basically had two full-time jobs and my husband convinced me that I had to pick one. After about eight months of a full-time job and writing like crazy on the side, I quit my full-time job and became a full-time freelancer.October 1, 2018 was my last day working a full-time job and I can honestly say that quitting was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve been able to significantly scale my writing income and enjoy a higher quality of life. I am now in control of my own schedule and income and love working from home. While I don’t get a steady paycheck, health insurance, a 401(k) match, or paid time off, the pros of self-employment outweigh the cons for me.If someone would have told me that the $15 automotive articles I was writing back in 2013 would put me on the path toward becoming self-employed, I would have laughed and called them crazy. I am forever grateful that the automotive marketing agency got back to me and introduced me to the world of freelance writing because my life has been changed for the better. This article first appeared on Business Insider.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
